Tatsumiya is a traditional Japanese restaurant that occupies an old wooden house. Its name comes from the old word for South-East, the location of the restaurant when seen from the Sensoji temple. As it used to be an antiques shop, everything about the house, both inside and out, reminds customers of good old Japan. Chibaya is a popular Daigakuimo (deep-fried syrup-coated sweet potatoes) shop. Chibaya has been using select ingredients to cook up homemade and rib-warming Daigakuimo at the back of Sensoji temple since 1950, and there is always a line of customers waiting in front of the trademark red Noren shop curtain for this delicious treat. Besides the popular favorite 400g Daigakuimo (\700), Kiriage (thinly-sliced Daigakuimo/ 400g - \700) and Fukashi-imo (steamed sweet potato/ 400g - \350) are also big treats.

Tokutaro is an old-established Japanese sweet shop that opened back in the Meiji era (1903). Tokutaro is famous for its Kintsuba, sweet bean paste covered with a thin layer of flour and then baked/ \120, and the seasonal specialty, Mame-Daifuku, rice cakes sprinkled with beans and stuffed with bean paste/ \140, which are only available from October to May. Creating thin layers of flour over bean paste for tasty Kintsuba requires delicate skill. Delivery outside Tokyo is also available.

This chicken restaurant is open only two and a half hours a day and serves only two dinner courses. The owner’s policy is to not stock ingredients but to use only those ingredients that were purchased that day. The style of eating by dipping yakitori into grated radish originated at this restaurant. Reservations only.

Towada serves soba noodles and other Japanese dishes made from such exquisite ingredients as ground buckwheat and chicken shipped fresh daily by air from Akita, fresh and tender duck from Aomori and delicious dried bonito from Kagoshima. Towada’s owner is the head of the Asakusa Association of Okami, an association of traditional Japanese-style restaurant and inn proprietresses.
